Lenovo Yoga 7 vs IdeaPad Flex 5: Which 2-in-1 Laptop Is Better?

Buying a laptop for university or work is already expensive. Paying extra for one that folds into a tablet makes sense only if those features help you.

The OLED Lenovo Yoga 7 is the stronger choice for its display and additional features. The IdeaPad Flex 5 can offer better value for assignments, office work, and occasional handwritten notes.

However, both names cover different configurations. Before spending your savings, or committing to instalments, check exactly which laptop you’re getting.

1. Compare the Exact Models First

For this comparison, we’re looking at two configurations listed by Sri Lankan retailers:

No

Battery and upgrade details come from Lenovo’s Yoga specifications and Flex specifications.

This is not an equal-spec comparison: the Yoga includes twice the storage and a different screen technology.

Local truth: two shops advertising “Yoga 7, 16GB” may be selling noticeably different laptops. Ask for the full Lenovo model number and panel specification before comparing prices.

2. Screen, Build and Pen: What Will You Notice?

The OLED screen is a meaningful reason to consider this Yoga. It offers deeper blacks and a wider colour range, which matters when editing photographs or preparing visual content.

But not every Yoga 7 has OLED. Independent testing found limited colour coverage on both a basic IPS Yoga and a WUXGA IPS Flex, so the Yoga badge alone does not guarantee a better screen. Yoga IPS test, Flex IPS test.

The Yoga has aluminium outer covers; the Flex uses reinforced plastic. That difference does not prove which will survive longer.

Both can support handwritten notes and PDF annotation, but pen inclusion varies. If you’re a student, test writing with your palm resting on the screen before paying extra for tablet features.

Also check reflections near a window. A screen that looks attractive inside a dim shop may be less comfortable in a bright classroom.

3. Performance and Battery Life for Daily Work

For Word, spreadsheets, browsing, online lectures, and lighter coding, a 16GB Flex is a sensible candidate. You do not need the more expensive Yoga simply to write assignments.

The selected Yoga is more appealing for light creative work, particularly because of its OLED screen. Adobe recommends 16GB RAM or more for Photoshop, although large projects can need more.

For several virtual machines, demanding 3D CAD, or serious gaming, consider a different configuration or laptop category. Check your university’s actual software requirements.

Neither selected laptop lets you add RAM later. Choose enough memory upfront.

The Yoga’s larger battery is promising, but capacity alone cannot predict runtime. Independent reviews used different processors, brightness levels, and power settings; their results are not guaranteed lecture-day endurance.

During power cuts, video calls and high brightness can use your reserve faster. In warm, humid conditions, keep vents clear and store the laptop somewhere dry; neither model has special protection established here.

4. Sri Lankan Prices: Is the Yoga Worth More?

These website prices were checked on 17 September 2026:

Nanotek: Flex 5 Ryzen 7, 16GB/512GB

Rs. 239,000

Rs. 239,000

That puts the Yoga Rs. 129,900 higher, about 54% more. These are reference listings, not confirmed purchase offers.

For assignments alone, that premium is difficult to justify. For regular photo editing, OLED and extra storage may make it worthwhile.

Sri Lanka’s standard VAT rate is 18%. Import-related costs, USD/LKR movements, and replacement stock can affect quotations, but they do not explain every price difference.

Before waiting through a restocking delay, request a written quote covering tax, delivery, and the full instalment total. Compare alternatives through our Laptop Prices in Sri Lanka guide.

5. Warranty, Hinges and Mistakes to Avoid

A cheaper grey import is not automatically fake. The question is whether its condition, accessories, and local support match the seller’s promises.

Lenovo says international warranty eligibility for selected consumer models depends on the machine and country. Do not assume an overseas warranty guarantees Sri Lankan service. Lenovo warranty policy.

One Sri Lankan Flex owner reported incorrect keyboard and touchpad behaviour when switching modes. The cause was unconfirmed, but the account highlights why testing the folding features matters.

Avoid these mistakes:

  • Treating extra “service warranty” years as replacement-parts coverage.
  • Assuming hinge complaints prove every model is defective.
  • Accepting “brand new” without written condition details.
  • Buying without confirming the pen and return policy.

Get the repair provider, battery coverage, and hinge exclusions in writing.

6. Which Should You Buy?

Choose the Flex 5 if everyday work and occasional handwriting are your priorities, and the saving remains substantial.

Choose the OLED Yoga 7 if its screen, storage, and connectivity solve needs you regularly have. Consider neither if you need demanding graphics performance or rarely use convertible features.

Before paying, check:

  • Full model number, processor, screen, RAM, and SSD.
  • Supplied pen and handwriting comfort.
  • Hinges, touchscreen, and laptop/tablet switching.
  • Battery condition and correct charger.
  • Written warranty, condition, and return terms.
  • Confirmed stock and final payment total.

Buy the features you will use and the support you can verify. There is no need to stretch your budget for the Yoga name alone.
